WTF

Thursday, the United States Supreme Court affirmed an individual's right to keep and bear arms. It was a 5 to 4 decision.

One of the dissenting justices was Justice Breyer. In his dissension, Justice Breyer ascertains, 'that individual self-defense is merely a “subsidiary interest” of the right to keep and bear arms'.

I wonder how 'subsidiary' his interest would be if it was his wife or daughter being raped and brutalized in front of him.

Just a thought.

Are you my mother?

Questions

Things you hope to never be asked by a 14 year old girl (see #5 below):

1. Do you keep your eyes open during sex?
2. How do you know when you are horny?

The Path to Hell...

is paved with good intentions. This was one of my mother's favorite cliches. I was reminded of her wise words this week.

Picture this: Me and four, yes four, 14 year old girls having 'fun' for 3 days at the lake. A girl's get-away. Paddling, kayaking, going to the beach...bon fires, smore's, life lessons. Right...can you say insanity?

Here are the top ten things I had forgotten about teenage girls (mine are in their twenties):

1. They screech and scream at anything and they do it LOUDLY
2. They are nocturnal (I am not)
3. They are not happy unless they are surrounded by drama
4. BOYS BOYS BOYS BOYS BOYS and more BOYS
5. They have no 'filter' and will say or ask anything, anytime, anywhere
6. They don't clean up after themselves
7. It takes them hours to get ready to go anywhere
8. When they aren't on the phone talking to boys, they are on the computer talking to boys
9. All they eat is JUNK!
10. They make me laugh!

While it was a long and trying three days with little sleep and lots of drama, and no I will not do it again, it wasn't all bad. They had fun and I put another paving stone on the path to hell.

Father's Day

Father's Day...a day to honor our fathers. Have you honored yours? Mine has been gone for some 14 years now. It seems like only yesterday. Wow, how time flies.

He wasn't a perfect father...he wasn't the worst either. He was just the typical man trying to do the best he could with what he had. Some days he had a lot and some days he didn't have so much. But I always felt like he loved me the best he could.

So thank you Dad for giving me the best you could...it was enough.

Cause you know...you can't expect more from someone than the best they've got.

Generosity Beyond Compare

I love words! I love books! I love libraries! In fact, this coming school year I will be the new assistant in my school library. I can't wait to browse among the shelves and inspire my students to explore the words between the book's covers. But I don't think my passion for these things comes anywhere close that of Ms. Carol Sue Snowden, a 30 year employee of the Whitehall library .

On the surface she appeared to be a very simple woman who lived a simple life...but looks are always deceiving. And now because of her generosity, generations to come, in no less than 11 different locations, will reap the rewards of literature for a very long time.

I don't know who I admire the most...Ms. Snowden for her generosity or her family who unselfishly supported her in her decision. What a legacy! We should all leave something so wonderful behind.

I See You!
